Works in Progress

I've been neglecting my update duty here on my website, as I've become a little lazy, and have allowed Facebook to one again become my focus... So, let me quickly share some progress on a few things, as well as some insight as to why I've been so slow at producing new completed works.

Not only did yesterday mark the one year anniversary of my Sister's passing, I also just recently lost my beloved Father. The magnitude of these losses are unlike anything I've ever experienced before in my life; two people that were quite literally, everything to me. I also said good-bye to my Grandmother shortly after losing my Sister, and so in just a year's time, my life has been significantly changed, forever.

This, of course, has greatly impacted my creative mojo and I'm slowly going through the healing process and praying daily for the strength and courage to face the world without these amazing people in my life anymore.

With all that being said, I've been focusing on enhancing my eye making skills, something I've been doing now for literally years, and creating new projects that are both helping me to get through this time, but also keep my focus on more constructive and positive things.

As many of you already know, I created a very in-depth tutorial on how to make small-scale realistic looking eyes which is available on A for Artistic and OOAK Artist Emporium websites. There is also a bonus Facebook group that comes with the purchase of the tutorial, so that any updates, new discoveries, products, or other "eye making" related information is shared.

My Etsy Shoppe has been closed for awhile due to the amount of stress I've had over the past year, but I will be re-opening it as soon as possible with my new and improved eyes, several new sculptures, and even some cool faerie-style houses that I'm also making into clocks. I sure hope you enjoy, and please support me by liking my Facebook page and even a share or two! Pinterest posts, and other social media support is always greatly appreciated. So, without further ado... here are a few things you can look forward seeing from me in the near future!

5mm Total Size, 2.5mm Iris

These eyes are new and improved because of the method I'm currently using. The lenses are made with a heat stable polymer material, and then sealed with a heat resistant protective top coat. The "whites" of the eyes are glass. To find out more about my eyes, please consider purchasing my tutorial, "How to Make Incredible Small-scale Eyes". While nothing, unless solid glass, can take extreme heat (as in the temperatures used to cure polymer clay) there are ways to do this with very minimal side-effects, and long term quality results.

This "head" was baked at 265F for 45 minutes. The eyes are post-baked, without any gloss or glaze, showing that they are heat stable. Once the figure is complete, final touches will include a final gloss finish to bring back any lost shine. Eyes can also be cleaned with rubbing alcohol prior to final gloss, any cloudiness will disappear.

5mm Total Size, 2.5mm Iris. My method allows for absolutely gorgeous multi color/hue effects in the tiniest of scale.

Nothing handmade is "perfect", but there is a certain quality and mystique that cannot be compared to "manufactured" or "machined". There will never be an exact matching pair, but that is the beauty of this art, because although I can get VERY close to perfect, I'm also creating something 100% one of a kind and unique every single time. Each pair can take upwards of 1.5 hours to create. A lot of time, painstaking attention to detail, and a TON of patience goes into each one.

5mm Total Size,2.5mm Iris
(Good for sculptures between 8-10 inches tall depending on personal preference)

Here is a current head I'm working on, she of course is just a "head" at the moment, but that will change soon! I really love this color of viscose hair, it's got gorgeous copper highlights in it and I think it will compliment her skin tone and eyes very nicely!

The lighting is not the greatest at the moment in my studio lol, and I have a giant crack over my camera lens on my phone....so... bare with me please LOL!
Really love the color of this hair!
She will be approx 9 inches tall when complete!

I'm also starting a line of Faerie and Fantasy Miniature House Clocks! In honor of my Father, a Watchmaker and Jeweler for over 60 years, I have decided to do something special in his honor and memory! No... I'm not a "Watchmaker" or "Clockmaker" like he was, BUT I can install clocks into these small whimsical fantasy houses which are not only adorable decorative pieces, but also functional, as they will tell you when it's Tea Time!

Still SO much more work to go! All the edges and seams must be sealed and painted, more paint/highlights, windows, awnings, porch and base, plus the clock install and internal lights! Lot of Work!
Lighting was not good up in the studio for pictures, so had to resort to a few quick shots here in the kitchen lol. These are just Work in Progress photos, so it's all good 🙂

I'm also completing my Pangur Ban and Aisling piece which I posted about nearly a year ago... but they have been waiting patiently for me to come back to them to finish. I'm also creating another girl sculpture to go with my Celtic style, Labyrinth inspired owl piece. I've also got a new mermaid, and several Alice inspired pieces in the works as well. Please stay tuned, I will likely be posting completed works soon, and will be re-opening my Etsy Shoppe with these and more exciting pieces shortly.

So thank you SO much for your interest in my work, and your support! it's very appreciated, and highly VALUED!

Stay Unusual,

-K

Pangur Ban & Aisling Update

Pangur Ban by Kendra M Gilbert, Virgo's Alchemy Studio

I started this piece what seems ages ago...but I'm finally back in the studio. I decided I didn't like the original Aisling I sculpted because her ears were too pointy...yes I could have chopped them off and just re-sculpted the ears, but no, I felt the project needed a fresh new start - so I'm totally redoing her.

Pangur Ban is an awesome little kitty from The Secret of Kells children's movie.

He is enchanted by Aisling, the forest spirit, to help Brendan escape from his bedroom...

Pangur Ban will remain the completed sidekick for this piece. He was one of the most challenging things I've ever done, and I do honestly mean this. He is a little over 2 inches high, and the amount of detail I had to squeeze into such a small figure was insane lol. I have him pictured here, along with the inspiration for him from one of my favorite movies, The Secret of Kells.

The hardest thing about this was learning how to do flocking, and doing it in such small areas!

I had a very hard time finding the right material to use for the flocking too... I hate the cheap feel and look of "craft fur", so I went to Hobby Lobby and found a faux fur rug that worked really nicely. So, I just made my own flocking out of that by chopping the fibers into tiny little pieces so that I could cover the main portions of Pangur Ban's body. I then made his tail and other longer hair from shorter cut pieces of the same fibers from the rug. His eyes are also handmade, one blue, the other green.

For just being a little over 2 inches, he has a LOT of character! I really enjoyed making him, and he will be the first of many fur babies I will be making in the future.

Thanks for stopping by! Please be sure to check back for updates, or visit me on Facebook!

Hellooooo!

Hi there! I've been a little MIA for awhile, and although I'm more active on social media, I know that I should be updating my website on a more regular basis. It's just been hard keeping up. Anyway, I thought you might like to see what I've been up to.

5mm total size, 2.5 mm iris, computer generated

Making my own eyes has been a passion for a very long time. I LOVE experimenting with new techniques and products. So, needless to say, it will more than likely be an everlasting obsession.

5mm total size, 2.5mm iris. Hand painted.

I'm not a huge fan of computer generated irises, but, you got to admit, they look pretty darn awesome. With that being said, I still enjoy hand painting my own irises.

As you may or may not know, I have a tutorial that shows how I make my eyes, and then for those who purchase my tutorial, I have a special closed Facebook group called "Let's Make Eyes!" where I continue to share all my research findings, product reviews and other things related to making handmade eyes for Figurative Sculptures.

One of the biggest things is finding products that we can use to create the life-like glassy dome lenses of our tiny masterpieces. Many issues can arise like shrinkage, yellowing, mutating and all sorts of delightful things... lol

So, that is why I find it so rewarding when I find a product that works, or works well enough - but I will always be searching for new and improved products and methods to create one of the most important aspects of my work - the eyes!

I hope you have enjoyed this update! More coming soon! And if you are interested in learning more about my tutorial, please see this post here where I tell you where you can find it! My Etsy shop is currently closed while I get myself back into the swing of things, but you can find my tutorial on AforArtistic.com and Ooakartistemporium.com! Thanks for stopping by!

Healing the Pains of Loss through Art...

My Sister, My Angel, My Light

My Sister, My Angel, My Light

For you Sis, I Love You, Always

For those who know me personally, and are close to me on social media, know that I just lost two very special women in my life. My one and only Sister due to metastatic breast cancer, and my Grandmother, who although was already struggling with declining health, I feel passed when she no longer felt my Sister's presence here on this earthly plane - they were very close. Feeling the magnitude of these losses so closely together made the entire world feel as if it had started to crumble beneath my feet. I'm still processing these losses, and thankfully I have a very good support system with a loving husband, beautiful children, and other family and friends who have been there for me. As an introvert, processing this type of pain is even more difficult for me. I have had to really fight not wanting to simply withdrawal myself and literally disappear. It's a pain that runs deep, and anyone who has experienced the loss of loved ones knows exactly what I mean. The roller coaster of emotions; going from happy memories, to regret, then delving into deep sadness, and even anger. It's been a very challenging few weeks, and I will always consider the year 2018 as the year I lost a major part of my heart and soul.

The Secret of Kells inspired Aisling Pangur Ban

I have been working steadily for months on several different projects, and although I have previously officially decided NOT to post WIP's (work in progress) photos, I figured I would post a few of one of my current projects - just so you all know I'm still working at my craft!

This will be Aisling and Pangur Ban, my own vision of them, inspired by The Secret of Kells...

(Pause site music by clicking the || in the upper right hand corner before playing video)

Aisling inspired by The Secret of Kells Work in Progress... Aisling will be approx 10 inches tall and be standing next to Pangur Ban on this One of a Kind base which I have sculpted out of 2 part epoxy over wire armature, and painted with a wash of select colors such as raw umber and yellow ocher. The colors and patterns are all inspired by this fantastical Irish folklore theme, giving it an enchanting forest appearance.

Virgo's Alchemy Handmade Eyes on Etsy!

COMING SOON TO ETSY!!!

My handmade eyes are a combination of glass, polymer clay, and resin. They are hand painted, not computer generated. Each pair is one of a kind, and no two are exactly the same - they are strategically matched in "pairs" after making 20 or 30 of the same color and size.

To get just one "matching" pair just right can take hours - and the time, energy, focus, and love that goes into each one is insane.

If you are in need of handmade "glass" eyes for your sculptures/art dolls, please be sure to check out my listings on Etsy.

I also will do custom requests, but you must find my custom listings on Etsy. You can find my shop here : www.etsy.com/shop/virgosalchemy

Thank you for your interest! My shop will be off of vacation mode shortly, I'm currently uploading listings!

4mm in total size, these tiny little gems are a joy to create! Here's lookin at you!

Now selling on eBay and Etsy!

I finally broke down and decided to go ahead and start listing my Art Dolls on eBay, and if they do not sell, they will be placed in my Etsy shop along with my Artisan Soaps.  So, all new Art Dolls will first be listed as 5 Day Auctions.  I cannot guarantee when I will start auctions until I get a little more settled in with eBay, but Mermaid Syreni will be my first listing.  You can find me on ebay @ virgosalchemy I will also place links here to live listings.  I will be re-listing my Mermaid in a Bottle after the turmoil with the hurricanes are over with, and will post the link here at that time. Thank you for your support! Unusually Yours,
